What is the difference between Venetian Glass and Murano Glass?

Murano Glass Vase and furnace

While Venetian glass and Murano glass are related, they are not exactly the same thing. Murano glass is a type of Venetian glass, but it is glass produced on the island of Murano. Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy.

According to experts, the term ‘Murano glass’ can only be applied to glass made on the island of Murano.

Venetian glass, in a broader sense, refers to the glassmaking tradition that has its roots in Venice and the surrounding regions. The Venetian Republic was a major center for glassmaking from the late 13th century onwards. However, due to the risk of fires in the city, glassmakers were eventually relocated to the island of Murano in 1291. This move helped protect the city from the risk of fire caused by the glass furnaces.

Murano glass has become synonymous with high-quality, artistic glasswork. It is often characterized by its intricate designs, vibrant colors, and skilled craftsmanship. Murano glassmakers have been known for centuries for their expertise in creating a wide range of glass products, including chandeliers, vases, figurines, and decorative items.

So, while Murano glass is a subset of Venetian glass, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably because Murano has been the focal point of Venetian glass production for centuries.

Our Murano Glass products vs Italian Glass products

At My Italian Decor, we take the term "Murano Glass" seriously. Any product that that we label as Murano Glass was 100% made on the islands of Murano. In addition, we maintain a relationship with the artist that created each of our products. Some of our products are labeled as "Italian Glass", or "Venetian Glass" and this indicates that it was created in Italy, or in Venice, and it is not Murano Glass.

In short, Italian glass is from Italy. Venetian glass is from Venice, Italy. Murano glass is made on the islands of Murano, Italy.
